A Big Heart has a Big Goal

Help End Abuse for Life Board Member Sheri Rodgers has decided to take the vision of a safer Nest into her own online hands. With the launch of a crowdfunding project, http://www.gofundme.com/helpchildinshelter, she has set the bar high. Frustrated with some of the unfulfilled needs at the Nest, she has decided to cast the net wide. Internet-wide. Inspired by other successful campaigns for great causes as well as some silly ones, she believes this is the right move and the right time.

Winter is hard at the Nest. Moms who could usually walk to work, walk her kids to daycare so she can get to work or take her kids to medical appointments find it difficult on a normal day, but in winter it can turn treacherous. What the rest of us take for granted, leaving the house, is a risk for her every time she steps out the door leaving her vulnerable to exposure to her abuser and the weather too.

Available transportation to these destinations could be life-changing. A secured parking lot is imperative. It is the most exposed part of our Moms’ day, just getting from a vehicle to the safety and security of inside.

Rodgers, with tears in her eyes, says, “Our little mountain community is the sweetest, most generous and giving group. It just does and does and gives and gives but our size has its limits. We need to branch out far and wide and tap into the unlimited resources the internet gives us by using this tool.”  This tool is intended to reach not only local supporters of The Nest but also to reach the family, friends and colleagues of the board members and staff of HEAL. Rodgers says, “The intent is to ask our wonderful allies to honor the work we do at The Nest by making a contribution to the women and kids who live at our shelter this Christmas.”

We all know of the ongoing needs of the Nest and its residents but winter and the holiday season put an extra burden on all resources. Thus, the goal of this campaign is ambitious and doesn’t end with the holidays. Sheri’s target is $79,800 through the length of the project. All funds raised will go to the greatest needs we find this winter, including:

  • Transportation for Moms to safely get to work, legal appointments and medical appointments so she won’t have to walk in the freezing cold and snow
  • Creation of a secure parking lot for residents so they and their children can safely get from vehicles to the shelter without dangerous exposure to their abusers
  • Warm shoes, clothing, coats, robes, pajamas and slippers
  • Winter blankets and bedding
  • Medical funding for injuries and prescriptions
  • Daycare, so Mom can work to change their lives for the better
  • A sofa for the family room at the shelter
  • A storage shed for donations that help our courageous survivors get back on their feet again
