There Are Many Ways to Support Your Local Domestic Violence Shelter This Holiday Season

By HEAL Staff Writer Jessica Martinez

Help End Abuse for Life, Inc. (HEAL) and the Nest, Lincoln County’s first and only shelter that serves survivors of domestic violence, have many opportunities available through which to support their cause this holiday season.

Firstly, they have released their 2016 holiday wish list, which includes items most needed at the shelter.  Requests include daily necessities, like diapers and undergarments, as well as larger shelter improvements, like bedding and couches.

“The Nest has been open for almost ten years now, since March 2007,” explained HEAL Operations Director Susanne Francis.  “Many items are original to the opening of the shelter and have served hundreds of women and children each year.  Imagine that kind of traffic on items in your own household, like sofas, rugs, bedding.  New items like these would make such a difference in our shelter and in the lives of the survivors who seek refuge here.”  wishlist

Secondly, HEAL also runs Sweet Charity Resale Boutique, whose proceeds directly support the Nest.  The local boutique offers high-quality used merchandise, including clothing, furniture, household items, and more.

“Currently, Sweet Charity is featuring several gorgeous faux marble tables generously donated to HEAL by the MCM Elegante Lodge & Suites,” said HEAL Board President Sheri Rodgers.  “These tables are just beautiful and will make a great gift!”

Furthermore, Sweet Charity graciously accepts your donations, and items donated to the shop are tax-deductible.  For more information, visit Sweet Charity at 26156 US Highway 70 in Ruidoso Downs or call (575) 378-0041.

Thirdly, HEAL & The Nest Domestic Violence Shelter participate in the charitable program AmazonSmile.

“Our organization is supported by this loving community, and with that in mind, we strongly encourage shopping locally and absolutely support the movement,” explained Rodgers.  “However, if you do find yourself shopping on Amazon, please do so through AmazonSmile!”

The best part about AmazonSmile is that you can support your favorite charitable organization at no cost to you.  Simply shop through smile.amazon.com anytime you need to make a purchase from Amazon – you will find the exact same prices, selection and convenient shopping experience as amazon.com – and AmazonSmile will then donate a portion of the purchase price to your selected charitable organization.  This donation is not tax-deductible.  For more information visit http://helpendabuseforlife.org/amazon-smile/.

Fourthly, and finally, HEAL & The Nest always accept monetary donations either by drop-off at the shelter or electronically online on their website at http://helpendabuseforlife.org/donate/.  Recently, HEAL has revamped their donation process by allowing contributors to select a specific cause to which they donate.  These include Nest Pets, A Fresh Start for Survivors, and HEALing Kids – Our Children’s Program at The Nest.

The Nest is one of the few domestic violence shelters that accept a family’s pet into shelter. The Nest Pets Program is a critical part of healing for a victim and, especially, for her children. Often, the pet represents one of the only sources of unconditional love known to the victim and her children.

Survivors and their children often come to The Nest Domestic Violence Shelter in the middle of the night with little more than the clothes on their backs. To many, things we all might take for granted like identification, clothing for a job interview or workplace or transportation seem far out of reach. A Fresh Start would provide the funding for those items so necessary to rebuilding their lives.

The Nest lovingly provides comprehensive trauma-informed care to child witnesses and survivors of domestic violence. Healing from the trauma and long term effects of domestic violence is a primary, driving goal for this program. Experiencing domestic violence is a traumatic event that requires specialized services to create and promote stability and resiliency for children and families.

“We owe so much gratitude to this community for their continued support, and extend our appreciation to anyone considering giving to our organization this holiday season,” said Francis.
