Each year, the University of New Mexico’s football team spends eleven nights in the cool Ruidoso pines. “It is a good place to practice,” Lobos coach Brian Despain said.
“We come for our fall camp, which is our preseason practice time.” The team practices at the White Mountain complex. While staying at the Lodge of Sierra Blanca, the team was told about the Nest by Katie Kmetz, marketing director at the hotel.
“She told us all about the Nest and what it does for the community,” Despain said. Before that, Despain and the team had only heard about the shelter in passing.
With that in mind, the Lobos decided to donate 23 pizzas from Pizza Hut for the women and children of the shelter. “We thought it would be a great way to give back to the community since the Nest is such a good cause,” Despain said. Throughout past preseason practices, the team has donated to the Boys and Girls Club, the Ruidoso Police Department and the Ruidoso Fire Department. “We see the donations as an opportunity to help Ruidoso, since the people of Ruidoso are so good to us,” Despain said.
Though the players have not seen or been in contact with the Nest directly, Despain as well as other Lobos representatives have. Despain said learning more about the good work the Nest does made the team want to help out. In turn, the football team has set a great example of outreach.
Thank you, Lobos for giving back to our community!
