When it comes to safety, Sam Pirelli of Pirelli Lock Shop in Ruidoso has played a “key” role at The Nest on more occasions than either shelter staff or he can remember.
“Sam is our ‘go to’ guy for any key or lock replacement needs,” Nest Shelter Supervisor June Shaughnessy said. “We provide secure storage and a locked bedroom for women who live at The Nest. It isn’t surprising with up to 42 people in the shelter on any given day that we sometimes need help with a lock or lost keys.”
However, each time Pirelli comes to the Nest, he refuses to receive payment. “He never charges us,” said Office Manager Sue Francis. “Sam simply refuses to give us a bill. He comes to the Nest whenever we need him. He has changed locks, made us keys and also changed all of the locks at Sweet Charity.”
When asked why he is so generous with his talent and time, Pirelli said, “The Nest does a good job and I want to help them do it.” The mission of HEAL is at the heart of Pirelli’s gestures – he believes in reaching out to help survivors of domestic violence and their children at The Nest.
Pirelli has come to the rescue more than once, even on a whim. “One time, someone locked the bathroom door so we were unable to utilize that bathroom,” Francis said. “This caused a great inconvenience for our clients.” Pirelli always arrives promptly and with a smile on his face.
The Nest greatly appreciates Pirellis’ hard work and dedication. “His services are important to our security and our clients’ peace of mind,” Shaughnessy said.
