The Deacon Bob Open is a four-golfer scramble with a shotgun start at 1pm on Saturday, August 10th at the beautiful and challenging Inn of the Mountain Gods championship golf course. The Open is an annual signature fundraiser for Help End Abuse for Life (HEAL) and The Nest.
According to Golf Committee Chairman Don Ratay, “We are once again astounded by the generosity and support of several golf courses in Alto, Ruidoso, Alamogordo, Cloudcroft and Las Cruces. The players are going to be impressed with the offerings this year.”
Several community and business members came together to jointly sponsor the collectable hats for the golfer goodie bag. “Friends of HEAL” pooled the necessary funds to pay for the popular hat. “Each year, we have several repeat golfers who proudly wear the Deacon Bob Open hat from the year before. There is a sense of competition amongst them as to who has the most hats from earlier tournaments,” according to HEAL Vice President Julie Gilliland.
Perhaps the most enticing prize is the hole-in-one competition. If a contestant makes the lucky shot, he or she will receive a brand new 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, generously provided by Ted Durham of Sierra Blanca Motors, a long-time supporter of HEAL and The Nest. Durham has also sponsored the golf towels that will also be given as part of the goodie bag.
The event’s silent auction also has a wide selection of generous golf-related goodies and gifts. Among the many coveted items are free rounds of golf at several top-rated golf courses and country clubs across New Mexico, including Rainmakers, Cree Meadows, the Links, Alto Lakes, Lodge at Cloudcroft, Desert Lakes, Red Hawk, Picacho Hills and Sonoma Ranch. Also offered will be windbreakers, shirts, hats, visors, gloves and other accessories, and gift baskets including certificates to several local businesses, hotels, restaurants, massage professionals and spas.
The entry fee is only $125 per golfer, which is a lower cost than the walk-on rate. The contest is not only a charitable and community-supported event, but also a great chance to get acquainted with the beautiful championship course at the Inn of the Mountain Gods.
