Ruidoso’s Midtown Market Undergoes Changes and Supports The Nest

The Midtown Market has been in business for over a year and a half now, located below Lucy’s Mexicali Restaurant at 2408B Sudderth Drive in Midtown Ruidoso.  This past February, the market phased out the convenience store items and transitioned to feature the new Old Barrel Tea Company at Midtown Market.

During the transition, owners Bailey Huffmon and Jasper Riddle donated items including toiletries, food, medicines, cleaning supplies, dog and cat food, and cell phone chargers to The Nest.  “We chose to donate to The Nest because we wanted to support an organization that provides assistance for people who really need it in our community,” said Huffmon.

Donations like these, items needed on a day-to-day basis, make an immediate impact on the lives of the residents at The Nest.

Rozlyn Long, Lead Shift Advocate at The Nest, explains, ”Often when women leave their abusive homes, they are forced to leave quickly and don’t have time to pack up necessities.  This means leaving behind things we take for granted, like cell phone chargers.  The chargers donated came in handy for several of our clients.”  Plus, when these necessary items are donated, shelter resources can be directed toward programs for the women and children.

“We were also thrilled to receive the donated dog and cat food,” added Long.  “Residents at our shelter are welcome to bring their beloved pets to stay with them here.  Unfortunately, abusers often use pets to gain power and control over the victim and their kiddos, and sometimes even abuse the animals as well as a way to get back at the victim for leaving.  Our shelter has kennels where animals can be kept safely while the survivors are away from The Nest doing things such as job searching, working, looking for housing or daycare and the like.”

The Old Barrel Tea Company at Midtown Market now features tea, honey (from Bee Chama in Lemitar), antiques, oddities, and gifts. “We have a variety of raw unfiltered honeys and locally blended teas,” explained Huffmon.  “With many health benefits to raw honey and tea we see our product as a wholesome indulgence and a healthy habit.” 11650677_10205624751891583_619874065_n

Additionally, Midtown Market has a hidden tap room on its way to the back portion of their store.  “We expect the business will continue to grow and change,” Huffmon continued.  “Market has something for everyone and one of a kind stuff you won’t find anywhere else.”  They anticipate the Hidden Tap at Midtown Market to open this July.

Huffmon encourages other businesses and individuals to follow their example: “If you’re considering donating to the Nest, do it!  They are doing a lot of good for our community and could use our support.”

The Nest graciously accepts donations Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM at 26374 US Highway 70 E in Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico.  Call (575) 378-6378 for more information.
