HEAL Celebrates First Responders

On Thursday, May 31, 2012 the Nest will be hosting a barbecue to honor our community’s first responders.

First responders include law enforcement personnel, firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, U.S. Border Patrol, U.S. Forest Service and other emergency professionals who put themselves on the line every day to help keep us safe.

The Nest staff will serve a menu of grilled hot dogs and hamburgers, sides and desserts from 1-3 PM in the shelter’s courtyard.  Attendees will be provided the opportunity to tour the shelter and learn about the Nest’s expanded services for domestic violence victims.

“The partnership we have with our area law enforcement andfirst responders has been vital to the success of our agency,” states SueFrancis, HEAL Office Manager.

Throughout the year, first responders answer calls at the Nest ensuring resident’s safety and health. Law enforcement officers from Lincoln County often bring victims to the safety of the Nest Shelter following a domestic violence incident.  Ruidoso Downs Police Officer Carolee Sandoval teaches a weekly Zumba class at the Nest for residents.  The Ruidoso Downs Fire Department delivers Santa by fire truck each December to visit the children at the Nest.  Ruidoso Fire Department Interim Chief Harlan Vincent works closely with Nest staff to ensure emergency preparedness for weather and fire emergencies.

“The first responders in our community have to be preparedfor any emergency. They are exceptionally well trained individuals whodemonstrate heroism on a daily basis. We hope that they will find their way outto the Nest that day so we can demonstrate our appreciation with some good foodand Nest hospitality,” continues Francis
