Local Chefs & Cooks Compete for the Nest’s Best Soup Title

The buzz continues to build for a community favorite – the HEAL Empty Bowl Event.  Competitors for the Nest Best Soup contest are amping up their signature soups to present to the public at Mt. Annie’s from 4-7pm this Sunday, October 28th.  Each entrant will be present to serve their soups and answer questions about its origin, ingredients and maybe even share a tip or two about making great soup.

The entrants for the Nest Best Soup are Zocca Coffee, Laura Weaver & Elizabeth Frey on behalf of JBarJ Church, IGA Lawrence Brothers, Schlotzkys, Senior Citizen’s Center in Ruidoso Downs, Bonito Park, Pena’s Place, Paul Kolb and West Kelly on behalf of the Disabled Skiers Program, LPN Jessica McWhirter from Artesia, Mario’s Market, Christie Herrera, staff and residents of the NEST, Village Buttery, Sue Lovett Francis, Britta Magnusson, Mrs. Ruidoso 2012 Amber Buster, Sue Hutchison, “Veggie Girl” Angie Fernandez, The Olive Oil Shoppe, Billy The Kid Casino, JR from Dreamcatcher Catering and C and C Consulting and Alto Lake Golf & Country Club.

The Nest Best Soup competition is the brainchild of HEAL volunteer Chef Brendan Gochenour.  Gochenour has been approaching various Chefs, restaurants, foodies and organizations about entering the contest.   The public will select the Best Soup by voting on the ones they sample.  The winner of the competition will receive bragging rights for a year and be presented with a Nest Best Soup plaque to display in their home, office or restaurant.

In addition to helping her husband solicit soups, HEAL volunteer Audrey Gochenour is managing the production of cookies and asks local residents to help by donating a dozen or two.   “It would be an easy way to support the Nest for this fun event.  If you can help, please call me at 937-8370.  Thank you!”

Tickets to the HEAL Empty Bowl Event are $15 and include a handmade pottery bowl, soup tastings, crackers, ice tea and dessert, which will be homemade cookies made by the HEAL committee, various community members, groups, Nest staff and residents.

There will also be a limited number of artisan bowls available, made by local artists specifically for this event, for an additional $10.  A large silent auction will be occurring during the Empty Bowl, featuring beautiful and unique pieces of art and local business gift certificates.
